Do you sometimes feel like you're not good enough at your job? Do you doubt your abilities and feel like you can't do anything right? If so, you're not alone.
A lot of women feel this way in the workplace. This can be really damaging to your career because if you don't have confidence in yourself, no one else will either.
In this blog post, we will discuss some tips for building confidence at work. Follow these tips and you'll be on your way to becoming a successful professional!
Develop a strong work ethic.
If you're always putting in the extra effort, your boss and colleagues will take notice. They'll see that you're a hard worker who is dedicated to your job, and they'll have more confidence in your abilities. - Your "watch out" for this, is that you can become a doormat if you don't make sure you are being rewarded, recognised, and compensated for this effort. You can become more invisible because people always expect you to be there to pick up the pieces without even asking you.
Do the simple stuff well.
Do what you say you are going to do, dress appropriately for the role, or industry, and always give your best effort. If you do these things, you will start to feel more confident in yourself and your abilities. - Watch out for not being yourself. Make sure you know who you are before taking a job in certain areas. Know and be comfortable with yourself and your values.
As an extreme, if you are vegan and working for a butcher, you may feel torn - because your values are different. Think about your values vs your company values and make sure they match up.
Try to take on new challenges
Be part of new and exciting projects This will show your boss and your coworkers that you are capable of more than they may have originally thought. You can gain personal development in a safe environment, while potentially networking with new people. Watch out for being taken for granted and being the 'donkey', you might need to work on your negotiation skills to be paid what you are worth.
Ask for feedback from colleagues.
They can give you honest feedback about your strengths and weaknesses. Get feedback after every project, every new thing you do. Get it written down if possible. This will help to remind you how great you are when you feel the imposter creeping in. Try to give feedback to others to make it part of your team culture- use the Situation, Behaviour, Impact model for a good way of giving and receiving feedback.
Use feedback to help you develop a plan for how to improve and grow in your career.
Don't get upset by it, if you are sensitive to criticism you will have to try to take the learnings from the feedback and not see it as personal.
Building confidence at work can be a challenge, but it is definitely possible. Follow these tips and you'll be on your way to becoming a successful professional!
