Who is The Best For You? Coaches, Mentors, Counsellors and others

Updated: Jul 24, 2021

Outside of sport we are not brought up to:-

a) consider coaching throughout our lives or

b) think of coaching as a viable career.

Some of my other blog posts have tried to answer some of the questions around what coaching is and who it is for, but there is confusion around other types of practitioners and how they can be useful.

Life Coach - If you are ready to take responsibility for you and your life - coaching is for you. Coaching is for people who have a dream and are ready and committed to take steps and action toward it. Coaching is an investment to improve your place in the world - whether that be your career or an element of your life.

Therapist -(or psychotherapist), is a licensed mental health professional who helps their clients improve their lives, by reducing symptoms of mental illness and supporting them to cope with various challenges by developing better cognitive and emotional skills.

Mentor - is a person who can support, advise and guide you. They typically take the time to get to know the challenges you're facing, and use their understanding and personal experience to help you improve. A mentor usually has experience in what you are trying to achieve.

This relationship is additional to a manager, and benefits from a more personal and confidential structure. Mentors have the potential to become lifelong friends, or the relationship might only last until you've achieved a goal, there's no one size fits all.

Health Coach - is a trained professional who works with clients in a group or 1:1 setting. The purpose of a health coach is to help their client to make long-term positive health changes via good advice, motivation and support.

Teacher - is a person who helps students to acquire knowledge, competence or virtue. Formal teaching of students is usually carried out by paid professional teachers.

Counsellor - A talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues.

Hypnotherapist - is a skilled and trained professional. By inducing a trance-like state, they help people use their subconscious mind to change behavioural patterns or ways of thinking.

NLP practitioner - NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is the practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do. NLP provides people with a methodology to model outstanding performances.

Business Coach - will assist and guide a business owner in running a business by helping them clarify the vision of their business and how it fits in with their personal goals. Business coaching is a process used to take a business from where it is now to where the business owner wants it to be.

Career Coach - help their clients identify personal goals, developing leadership skills and planning career moves. They may include helping clients search for new employment opportunities, providing feedback on their CV or cover letters and preparing for a successful job interview.

Manager - The four primary functions of managers are planning, organising, leading, and controlling. By using the four functions, managers work to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of their employees, processes, projects, and organisations as a whole.

Is a Life Coach worth it? YES.

To know you are doing things well and you are on the right track.

To help you find your dreams and live a well lived life. To support you to achieve whatever you want or need in your life. To help avoid mistakes because of your own lack of self confidence .

Show/Girl often does Pro Bono work for domestic violence survivors and most recent ‘pay what you can afford’ sessions for people who have found themselves out of work due to the global pandemic.
